What We Do

Consultancy

We provide an independent, professional and pragmatic approach to managing and creating woodland. Our expertise comes from experience managing a diverse range of woodlands and woodland types including:

  • Estate woodland

  • Sporting woodland

  • Farm woodland

  • Commercial woodland

  • Conservation woodland

  • Amenity & public woodland

Please see the 'Services' section for the broad range of services we can provide for you.

Contracting

In addition to our advisory service we also undertake small scale woodland management tasks including:

  • planting (and guarding),

  • maintenance,

  • weed control,

  • redundant guard removal,

  • pruning and

  • coppicing.

These services are borne from experience where many tasks in woodlands can be undertaken by larger machinery and contractors but the fine tuning and "finishing" tasks which need to be undertaken to manage woodlands to the highest standard are often neglected or forgotten.

As a business we provide these services to clients to ensure that their woodlands flourish.

Who We Are

HJL Forestry is headed up by Huw Lloyd as our lead forestry consultant.

I started HJL Forestry in 2023 to provide an independent woodland consultancy service to landowners. The key aim of our management advice is to advise landowners on managing their woodland to meet their objectives. This may sound like some corny 'management speak' but it isn't. It is crucial to set out what a landowner wants form their woodland in the first instance because many have never given it thought. Only then can we start to manage a woodland.

My Background

I grew up in West Wales which gave me a good grounding in all things rural (& rugby). At 18 I went to Harper Adams University in Shropshire and after living and working in Durham & North Wales I moved to Oxfordshire in 2014.

Prior to starting the business I spent 6 years working for two well respected woodland consultancy businesses managing a range of woodlands for a wide variety of different owners. Before this I spent 4 years running a small private shoot in the Cotswolds and also spent 6 years working for BASC (British Association for Shooting and Conservation).

My interests and hobbies include shooting and working spaniels, hunting, rugby and cricket.
